Is it too late for the Chiefs to turn it around?

Last February the Kansas City Chiefs made back-to-back Super bowls with arguably one of the most talented quarterbacks ever and exceptional offensive weapons. It looked like the start of a future dynasty after winning the Superbowl the year before, all they had to do was beat Tom Brady the then 5-time Superbowl winner, with his new team the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. What followed in that game was a dominant 31-9 win by 31-9 win by the Bucs, where their defence was exposed, and their offence couldn’t get going. This leads us to today where they sit last in the AFC West with a 2-3 record but how did they get there, and can they turn it around?

Well, the answer for many would be yes, but it is far from being certain at this point. The Chiefs have not had the easiest schedule so far, as each of the teams so far would be considered playoff contenders. However, for a team like the Chiefs the performances so far this season have been underwhelming, to say the least considering they finished last season with a 14-2 record. Their electrifying offence has not quite been at full throttle with all of their main weapons not performing to the peak of their powers. This could be put down to sheer bad luck as seen in Running Back Clyde Edward Helaire’s injury and 2 fumbles this season. As well as defensive schemes catching up with the offence and using similar plays that the Buccaneers used to topple them. Which has made star their main star Patrick Mahomes throw 6 interceptions this season.

With the offence not quite at its best but still, at a good level, the defence has needed to step up this season, and it hasn’t. In fact, it has been woeful. Their defence has given up over 29 points in all of their games this season and are on pace to give up over 550 points and are allowing 7.08 yards this season, which is the second worst in NFL history. Which would rank them among some of the worst defences that the NFL has seen over the last 5 seasons. The problem is there is no main reason why they are so bad this season, but more of a multitude of them.

Luckily for the Chiefs, it is still early in the season that they can still improve especially defensively where it seems things can’t get any worst performance wise. On top of that, the Chiefs have added another weapon offensively to help Mahomes in wide receiver Josh Gordon who can be unstoppable at times. Add this to their schedule that now looks considerably easier now, they might be able to build momentum and look like the Superbowl contenders everyone expected.
